Making Decisions: Take Control of Your Life

by Jeff Baldock, MA, MSW, RSW

Making decisions can be daunting, especially when the choices we make have a significant impact on our lives. It is common to feel stuck, unsure or overwhelmed when making an important decision. However, the power of deciding is undeniable, and the benefits of determining far outweigh the cost of not.

Making a decision gives us a sense of control. It's easy to feel helpless and powerless when we let circumstances dictate our lives. When we decide, we are no longer at the mercy of external factors. This sense of power gives us confidence in ourselves.

Making a decision helps us move forward. Indecision can lead to procrastination, preventing us from taking action and achieving goals. We can take the necessary steps to move forward and work towards achieving our goal by making a decision. Taking action, even a small step, can motivate us to continue making progress.

Additionally, making a decision helps us learn and grow. Whether our decision is good or bad, we can learn from the experience and grow. Making a decision and seeing the outcome of that decision can teach us valuable lessons we can apply to future situations.

On the other hand, the cost of not making a decision can be high. Indecision can lead to missed opportunities, lost time, and added stress. The longer we delay making a decision, the more anxious and stressed we become. The longer we procrastinate, the more we miss out on opportunities. The reality is that we may regret not taking action when we have the chance.

In conclusion, consider the power of making a decision. Making a decision gives us a sense of control, helps us move forward, and helps us learn and grow. The cost of not making a decision can be high, and it's essential to recognize the benefits of deciding and the consequences of indecision. If you need to make a decision, take the time to weigh your options and make a choice. You'll be glad you did.
